What will my child learn in kindergarten?

Here are a few examples of what children will learn (or deepen their understanding of) in kindergarten:

Reading/Language Arts

  • Develop an appreciation of books
  • Express ideas
  • Use D’Nealian handwriting to form letters and numbers
  • Identify letters and letter sounds
  • Read sight words
  • Use letter sounds to read words

Math

  • Create and expand upon a pattern
  • Sort and classify different objects and materials
  • Compare and graph different objects
  • Count and write numerals to 31 or higher
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems

Science and Social Studies

  • Make observations and name parts of plants and animals
  • Describe changes in weather and seasons over time
  • Demonstrate basic skills that reflect civic values
  • Use geographical tools and historical stories to explore places and times

Music

  • Sing songs, play musical instruments
  • Recognize high and low pitch
  • Express mood through movement

Art

  • Express ideas freely
  • Demonstrate originality and creativity
  • Develop knowledge and skills in color, line, shape, space and texture, and the use of different art media
  • View and discuss artwork

Physical Education

  • Gain coordination and fitness skills
  • Grow and develop through participation in activities
  • Make positive decisions about a physically active lifestyle
