North View team takes third at Future City competition

North View Junior High IB World School’s “Goalden Sunville” team earned third place at the Regional Future City Competition held at St. Thomas University on January 24. The team also received the “Most Innovative City Setting” award, sponsored by the 3M Foundation, for locating their city on the Planet Dihn in the Andromeda galaxy.

Now in its second decade, the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is a program developed for seventh and eighthNorth View team grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering. North View has participated in the competition for five years, but this is the first time a team has advanced to the final round of five competitors.

The 2009 regional competition featured 30 future city entries submitted by 21 schools, representing districts such as Hopkins, Chaska, Robbinsdale, and Rosemount-Apple Valley.

North View’s team members include: presenters Bailey Lutz, Sophia Myszkowski, and Paige Myers; alternates Sam Myszkowski and Sean Paquette; and city builders Billy Lyon, Sheila Mendoza, and Ton-Hy Pha. Teacher Tom Brandt, school enrichment coordinator, coaches the team, in partnership with engineer mentor and volunteer Tyler Hall from Terracon.
