Quel Voyage! District Students Attend French Language Camp
Twenty-six Level I French students from Osseo Area Schools made the journey to northern Minnesota to participate in a weekend French immersion program at Camp Lac du Bois Concordia Language Villages near Bemidji, Minnesota. Students from North View, Maple Grove and Brooklyn junior high schools joined together on this trip the weekend of March 16-18.
All communication and interaction was attempted in French. The thrill and nervous excitement of speaking French in everyday situations just to communicate daily needs, as well as grow in social interaction and cultural awareness was the standard sentiment for all involved. Students received an “award” if the “mysterious counselor” heard them speaking a lot of French.
Through music and dance, sport and hobby, and general eating and daily activities, students were treated and invited to learn about the life and sounds of life in France during the Revolution. “It was quite interesting to see the king beheaded,” said one enthusiastic student.
Students were chaperoned by two of their teachers Mme. Jeffrey and M. Stewart, as well as parent volunteer Christi Mitchell. As one of the teachers observed, “Students who went to camp highly recommend the experience to other students. They were excited to use their French.”
The student trip was partly funded by a grant from District 279 Foundation. These funds helped defray costs by covering student transportation. Students were responsible for the down payment as well as the rest of the tuition. Some ambitious North View students worked off their portion of the trip by helping their teachers.
With wholehearted agreement that the weekend was a success, students returned to North View with a unique experience and desire to continue their language efforts.
Bravo for the effort of these beginning students of French!
