Zanewood Community School
7000 Zane Avenue North, Brooklyn Park, MN 55429
763-315-0662

Principal: Mrs. Carol Rowan
Student Population: 480

Zanewood serves a diverse student population with a rich mixture of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Success for All is a guiding philosophy and program with clear standards for measurable gains in learning, including students with varying achievement levels, languages, and special needs. The school community has a strong focus on accelerating student achievement. Our primary academic goal is to have all students reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade and maintaining that level through the remainder of their school years.

Extra funding from the State and Federal governments has enabled Zanewood Elementary to offer a variety of programs to meet the unique needs of their students. For example:

· Lower class sizes, grades Kindergarten through six
· Lower class sizes for 70-90 minute reading periods (average 17 students per teacher, grades 1-6)
· Small group and individual tutoring for reading and math
· Computer Curriculum Corporation assisted tutoring in basic skills
· Positive learning environment with a Recognition & Discipline Plan focused on schoolwide expectations of “Respect, Work, & Belong”, monthly character education, and “Getting Along” social skills and cooperative learning instruction.
· Emphasis on safe schools with violence prevention, and consistent behavior instruction and follow-through
· Student produced morning video broadcast announcements, ZW70
· Parent and community partnerships are emphasized including: volunteer programs, Family Nights, Parent Teacher Organization, parent representation on the Site Council, home reading/math expectations, and extended day/year academic and recreation programs.

Zanewood Community School has spaces for English Language Learner classrooms, special services, receiving/custodial, kitchen, and cafeteria. The north addition in 2002 added new gyms, media center, computer lab, video production area, and music rooms. The Zanewood Recreation Center is funded in collaboration with the City of Brooklyn Park. The Zanewood Welcome Center houses a Kidstop (daycare) program, Preschool Screening services, and Community Education. This $7 million addition/renovation, completed in the fall of 2002, resulted in Zanewood Community School.
