School Profile 2006-2007 Principal: Mr. Scott Taylor |
|||||||||
Weaver Lake Elementary is one of 19 elementary schools in District 279, Osseo Area Schools. Weaver Lake opened in the fall of 1991 and will be the school home for approximately 580 students during the 2006-2007 school year, pre-kindergarten through grade six. Our building also hosts 3 district special education programs for students with autism spectrum disorders, a KIDSTOP childcare center, More for Fours (an Early Childhood program for 4 year olds), and a Be Four program. Classrooms at Weaver Lake are organized in a traditional format with an average class size this year of about 24 students per teacher. Classes tend to be smaller at the primary level and larger in the upper grades. Our teachers make use of regular collaborative planning to enhance instruction and curriculum continuity. Some departmentalization occurs in grades 4-6. A mixture of grouping and whole class instructional strategies is used to meet individual student's needs. Weaver Lake provides a full range of support services to meet the varying needs and talents of its learners. District special education services or reading and math skills sessions are available as appropriate. Special activities for students include district chorus, orchestra, band, newspaper, student council, DARE, Junior Naturalists, an Arts & Academic Expo, and a variety of community education and recreation activities. A building gifted and talented (ExCEL) teacher provides services for selected students. Weaver Lake is also very fortunate to have an on site environmental center. Our very active parent group (PST) supports a naturalist who helps students in all grades explore nature through this center. The PST is very active in supporting the school through volunteerism and fundraising. Our volunteer coordinator works with volunteers assisting staff and students in many valuable ways. Weaver Lake is a shared-decisions school. A site council consisting of 50% parents and 50% staff coordinate a variety of teams working to continually improve the quality of our school. Parents are active participants on most school committees. Students, staff and parents look forward to focusing on quality educational experiences during the 2006-2007 year. Our school improvement goals for the year are: 1) Improved reading skills and 2) Increased student respect for other students, adults and our school building.
