The 2007-2008 school year is off to a great start and the Junior Naturalist program has a record number of participants! Fifth and sixth grade students elect to meet twice per month during their lunch hour to learn about nature, prepare and lead Weaver Lake Nature Night activities, and help maintain and improve the Nature Center located behind the school.

To date, students have:

  • Teamed up to create informational posters about Minnesota wildlife for display
  • Weeded the butterfly and flower gardens
  • Spread woodchips along the Nature Center trails
  • Guided evening tours of the Nature Center on Nature Night
  • Written and presented the puppet show, “Preparing for Winter”, to first and second grade students
  • Discussed pomology, the science of apples, and taste-tested a number of hometown orchard varieties
  • Dissected owl pellets

It's not too late to join! Upcoming activities include:

  • Compass making
  • Snowshoeing
  • Animal tracking
  • A presentation about forest fires
  • The study of natural pigments
  • A presentation by REI and a spring hike

Plant a Maple Grove Boulevard!
May 17th, 7:00-9:00 a.m.

Although the weather's chilly and snow covers the ground, Maple Grove is looking ahead to summer and needs 250 volunteers to help beautify our roads. Volunteers are assigned and report to specific, prepared flowerbeds on May 17th.  There you meet your leader who will have the planting plan for the flowers left at each site  All volunteers need to bring is a small garden trowel and a willingness to dig in the dirt! If you're interested, please have a parent call 763-494-5956 as soon as possible to sign up.  Participation is limited to the first 250 volunteers.  You'll be contacted to know where you're assigned or if you're on the waiting list.
