O.A.S.I.S./Autism Parent Support Group Summer Program 2007Osseo Area Source of Information and SupportInformation and Support Group for Parents of Children with ADHD, ADD, LD, EBD, ODD, OCD, autism, depression, and other learning and behavior differences ** The Autism group will be teaming with the O.A.S.I.S group for June, July, and August. Please note that we will be meeting every 3 rd Tue.. There are some wonderful speakers coming that we felt both groups would enjoy! The speakers will provide resources, information, and ideas of how to help advocate for your child. Tuesdays 7-9 p.m. 6/19/07 Asperger Syndrome: An Overview Our speakers will present an introduction to Asperger Syndrome, including characteristics, needs, and strategies. They will use information from experiences and current books designed to help parents support their children with similar needs. Our speakers are Nan Foker and Sandy Hage , both Autism Resource Specialists in the Osseo #279 school district.7/17/07 Food; Friend or Foe? Can what we eat influence how we think, behave and develop? Absolutely!! More and more research is providing us with information that what we and our children eat, influences overall health. The role of food allergies and sensitivities play is more common than most think, but many of us do not realize that a allergy or sensitivity may be causing some of the symptoms or prevent us from obtaining optimal health and wellness. In this presentation, our speaker discusses what foods tend to cause symptoms such as gastrointestinal problems, skin problems and behavior problems. We will discuss gluten free and dairy free diets as well. Mark Norman is a graduate of the American Health Science University in Aurora Colorado and has been in private practice for over 13 years. He has worked with many practitioners in Minnesota and Wisconsin with offices in Shoreview MN and Hudson WI .
8/21/07 -Home/School Collaboration for Students with ADHD and/or Autism Our speaker will share information regarding the most effective strategies that parents can use with school personnel. She will discuss how to ask for a school assessment, what to expect at an assessment review and what should be included in an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Discussion will include students from early childhood through graduation up to age 21. Leslie Laub is a licensed psychologist specializing in children and adolescents with behavioral challenges. She has been Director of Special Education and Special Services for three districts in Minnesota . Currently, Leslie teaches courses at the University of St. Thomas to teachers who want to gain greater understanding about children with disabilities.
