Some of the highlights from second grade
Curriculum:

Reading, Language, Spelling:
Text Harcourt Trophies

Handwriting: D'Nealian All manuscript letter forms are reviewed and practiced throughout the year.

Math: Houghton Mifflin's Math Expressions:
Skills taught are addition and subtraction to 18. (Children should be able to do 36 problems in 3 minutes), place value, numbers to 1000, money, time, adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers, shapes, fractions, measurement, and introduction to multiplication and division.

Social Studies: Text - Making a Difference Exploring Our Country
The text stresses commonality and diversity among groups.  Students will learn about people in groups and the importance of working together, geography and map skills, American leaders in government / art / science and the contributions they make.

Science: Four units are taught: Monarchs - September; Air & Weather - Oct.- Nov.; Balance &Weighing - Jan.; Classification -Feb.- Mar.; and Dinosaurs - April-May.

Health: Text - Your Health
Topics studied are: feelings, your body, nutrition, exercise and health, staying healthy, medicines and other drugs, and safety.

Art: Elements of art that we will be working with are: color, line, shape, space, and texture.

Homework Expectations: Second grade homework expectations are a minimum of 1/2 hour per day, which may include reading AR books, completing math homework, studying spelling works, practicing basic math facts, completing any work that was not finished in class, or working on occasional special projects.

The AR requirement for the first trimester is 8 points.

2nd grade field trips this year:

Mill City Museum on Tues. Dec. 18 for the day

Science Museum of Minnesota on April 24 for the day
