Fun and Effective Parent Tips!

  1. School Work! Parents don’t settle for the answer, “I don’t have any schoolwork to do.” Even if there was no homework assigned, it doesn’t mean that the student doesn’t have material to review. Make sure to check their assignment notebook each night to see what took place in school. Many students fail to write down what they have to do and as a result have missing assignments.
  2. Student Work Area! All students should have some area, no matter how big or small, that they call their work area. Ideally this area should be free from distractions.
  3. Challenging Sons and Daughters! When dealing with a difficult child keep this in mind. A student must want to change, see others do the correct behavior, and know how to change. Getting into a power struggle with a student is not what you want. Remember the theory of holes; when you are in one stop digging!
  4. Communication is Critical! Whether communication with the family happens in the van on the way to practice or around the dinner table; it is imperative that it does take place. On average, families spend only a minute or two a day talking to each other. Find out what is happening in school. After your son or daughter tells you about their day, tell them about yours. Students love to hear about the workplace!
