sent home to update you about what we are covering
along with current happenings in your child's classroom.
It is also intened to be a guide to help you with homework expectation.

MCA weeks
Wed. and Thurs. 4-16/17 Math MCA
Mon. and Tues. 4-21/22 Reading MCA
Be sure your son/daughter gets plenty of rest the night before the testing. Students are allowed to bring water bottles and a snack during the testing.

Mr. Harvey's Subjects Taught and Expectations

Math (1:45-2:50)
Unit 4 Multiplication and Division with Whole Numbers and Decimals-Each student in my math class can expect 2 pages assigned to them on a daily basis. Each assignment is introduced in class with a short work period for guided practice for teacher questions.

Reading (9:30-11:10)
Research:
We are currently working on our Research Unit in 5th Grade Reading. Students will be researching "Diseases". A packet went home explaining the research process. I do not have any due dates yet, since I am monitoring their progress, but I have a tentative date of April 4 to be completed with their notecards.
The Reading block is broken into 3 basic subject categories (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Spelling) Students are also reading a selected novel. Currently we are reading "The Light on Hogback Hill". A typical week is set up so that students can expect the same homework expectations: Students should be reading independently at home 400 minutes a month and completing their Monthly Reading Calendar.
Monday- Introduced to the story selection's vocabulary. Student's are presented with a PowerPoint presentation with the selected vocabulary words. Students take a spelling pre-test. Student's practice Day 1 of D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) Homework-Vocabulary Worksheet Due on Tuesday. 3 page Spelling Packet Due on Thursday.

Tuesday-Day 2 of D.O.L.
-A scheduled trip to Elm Creek media center so students can renew books, or receive a presentation from the Mrs. Olson (Library Media Specialist)
-Introduced to the Grammar skill of the week (ex. proper nouns, pronouns)
Homework-Pink Grammar worksheet. (Student's may also be assigned lessons from Wordly Wise (ex. Lesson 5 A&B))

Wednesday-Day 3 of D.O.L.
-Read the selected story of the week
-Wordly Wise practice and review
-Continued practice with Grammar skill of the week.
-Read story of the week in Reading Book.
Homework-Grammar BOOK assignment page.
Read over story and vocabulary to practice comprehension for Friday test.
(Student's may also be assigned lessons from Wordly Wise (ex. Lesson 5 C &D))

Thursday-Day 4 of D.O.L.
-Review Spelling words
-Continued practice with Grammar skill of the week.
-Read BFAL book (Grade level short read for fluency and comprehension)
Homework-Grammar BOOK assignment page.
Continue studying for Spelling Test and Vocabulary and Comprehension Test from selected story from reading book.


Friday-Day 5 of D.O.L.
-Take Spelling Test
-Take D.O.L. Quiz (A random D.O.L. from the week)
-Take Reading story vocabulary and comprehension test.

***On short weeks, assignments may be modified. As the year goes on students will be assigned reading selections from various novels that we are reading in class.

Health/Science (1:05-1:45)
In Health we are learning about Diseases.
In Science we began a unit on Circulation and Respiration. Students will be learning about how blood flows throughout the human body.

Social Studies (2:50-3:30)
Chapter 7 is a chapter focused on the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. Students are required to complete a vocabulary and study guide as we progress in the chapter. They will also be required to complete a worksheet packet dedicated to topics covered in the chapter.
