Return to 2nd Grade Index

Fall, 2005

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year!  We are anticipating a good year full of challenges and opportunities for your children.  Be assured that we are working very hard to provide a curriculum, which will expand your child’s knowledge of the world near and far. This second grade year will offer students new information as well as practice and enrichment in basic skills.

Our comprehensive plans for developing our students’ reading and writing skills are multi-faceted.  Each day includes a homeroom language arts block made up of our district’s reading, speaking, writing, viewing and spelling curriculum objectives. We also integrate these into other core curriculum, such as science, social studies and math.  Four days per week we add a forty-minute block of time for “leveled reading” instruction.  During this time the children are grouped by performance levels, as determined by placement tests and daily work.

All other subjects are taught in the homeroom classroom. There are four science units:  Classification, Balancing and Weighing, Air and Weather, and Dinosaurs.  We use Everyday Math as our core math curriculum.  Look for the Home Links after about three weeks of school.  These provide you with a look at what we are doing in math, as well as the chance to do homework with your child.

Lunchtime this year is 11:40, followed by recess.

We sincerely hope you’ll be involved in classroom activities through listening to your child, looking over finished papers that come home, and asking your child about them, practicing math facts and spelling words and of course, reading to and with your child.  We will periodically send home classroom newsletters, book orders, and homework.

Parental involvement is the number one factor in improving student achievement.

      Thank you for your help!
