The kindergarten teachers would like to thank all the parents for their continued support. Our goal setting conferences were very successful. We are all on the same team providing your children with the best education possible.
Homework has started. Please check your child’s Daily Home Folder each day. Homework will be sent home Monday through Thursday.
Please remember to send your student to school dressed appropriately for the weather. We have outdoor recess each day.
Kindergarten Teachers,

Reading : We are continuing to review our short vowels and using them in our spelling words. The difference between fiction and nonfiction stories is being discussed in class. The ways we use corn is an example of a nonfiction topic we have read about that you could expand upon at home.
Math: We are continuing to solve story problems using addition or subtraction. We are learning that there are a variety of ways to solve real life situations which require these math skills.
Please make sure your child has a warm winter coat with a functioning zipper, a warm cap, and warm mittens or gloves to wear. In addition, they will need a scarf, boots and snow pants to wear when the snow comes. It is indeed getting to be very cold out!
Mrs. Cleary, and Mrs. Eckart
| There are many ways you can help your child be successful at school. First, with the weather getting colder your child needs to come dressed appropriately every day. Please help them select a warm coat, gloves, hat and boots to wear.
Second, they have math and or reading homework many nights a week. Please check their book bags and homework folders for assignments that can be completed at home.
Finally, each second grader has a reading calendar and is asked to read for 20 minutes every night and record that information on the calendar. If we work together, our second graders will continue to have a great year.
Second Grade Teachers,
Ms. Zemske, Mrs. Gustafson and Mrs. Wimer
| Math: The students have been learning about geometry in unit 2, and solving addition and subtraction word problems in unit 3.
Possibly one of your students’ conference goals was to learn their addition and subtraction facts. Thank you for continuing to practice these facts at home.
This year in third grade, we collaborate and team-teach with several other Crest View staff members. Mrs. Madsen, Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Asche, from the ELL department and Mrs. Bongaarts, our speech specialist. The staff members come into our third grade classrooms and help us teach the students science, health and social studies through reading and writing.

Our new recess for grades 4th through 6th can be called productive or structured. Whichever name you choose, it means that students are having fun learning new games and using new equipment. Our physical education teacher, Stacey Nelson, organized and trained students and staff on this new model of recess which provides students with many more fun alternatives during their recess time. The students have quickly learned the new games and are doing a great job following our new recess If you have any questions about this program, please call 763-561-5165, ext. 72158.
Mrs. McNamara, School Counselor

Science: Fifth grade is continuing our study of birds and flight in Science. We have been learning about the different characteristics of birds and how this helps them survive and adapt to their surroundings.
Social Studies: We have been learning about the Nifty Fifty states! We have worked on maps and finding information about our fabulous country.
Writing: Students are fine tuning their skill of writing in Writer’s Workshop and working on the theme “Team Work” in our 5th grade reading series.
Yesterday we had the musical treat of Willy Wonka at Osseo Senior High. We really enjoyed seeing other students in our district display their talents.
We are thankful for our Crest View students and families, especially during the Thanksgiving season.

Greetings from the 6th grade!
D.A.R.E. The DARE essays are due on Thursday, November 19. Graduation for DARE is on Tuesday, November 24, at 2:00 p.m. Please join us in this event!
We are looking forward to our Long Lake trip coming up on December 14 through December 16. Remember to plan ahead using the packing list that you received.
Also, as the weather gets colder, students need to have warmer clothing for outdoor recess.
Math: We just started chapter 4. In this unit students are learning to multiply and divide decimals. It is critical that they complete homework assignments, as that is reinforcement of what was done in class.
Reading : Leveled reading continues in full force. Holding your child accountable for some home reading time (about 1/2 hour per night) can accelerate their growth in reading.
Please look for Progress Report Cards which will be sent out on Wednesday, December 9. If you have questions about the report please feel free to contact us.
Enjoy your upcoming holidays!
Coming soon! December 14-16, we are looking forward to our field trip to Long Lake Conservation Center. We will be collecting the permission slips and money in the next couple of weeks. Be sure to fill out the medical information on the back of the permission slip.

| Homework Help Line
Welcome to Fall!! During the months of September and October, I was able to visit all the K-6 classrooms twice. I explained to the students that as the school counselor, I am one of the support staff here to help them be the best students they can be. Students may need support individually, or in a small group setting. Students can access my support through teacher, parent, or self-referrals. I also enjoy being in each classroom regularly as it gives me an opportunity to reinforce our important school-wide character education curriculum, as well as get to know all CV students.
In Kindergarten classrooms, we learned about what feeling we have when we first start coming to school and the importance of personal space.
In first grade we learned about teasing and being a good friend.
In second grade, we learned about teasing and our unique individual differences.
In third grade, we set goals for being prepared, punctual and polite, as well as positive coping skills for our worries.
In fourth and fifth grade, we learned about harassment and teasing. We also started the Life Skills curriculum and learned about self-esteem building and decision making.
In sixth grade, we reviewed the District 279 harassment policy and learned about disabilities awareness.
The District 279, K-12 counseling department has developmental outcomes and objectives for all students that support our district mission:
To inspire and prepare all students with the confidence, courage and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning.
I look forward to the 2009-10 school year as we work with families and students to achieve our mission here at Crest View!
Please call me at 763-549-2324 if you have questions.
