School Improvement Plan
Goal 1: 52% of all students in grades 3-6 will show one year's growth in reading based on the NWEA.
Strategies include:
- Implementing a “15 for 5” (15 minutes, 5 days a week) school wide program to motivate children to read at home.
- Implement a “Reading is Fundamental” book give away program at school. Children will receive 3 free books this school year.
- Bring continuity to the leveled reading program through Professional Learning Community discussions and cross-grade level communication.
- Conduct monthly fluency tests for students who reading “below grade level” to track progress and then focus instructional strategies to support these students.
- Professional Learning Communities will monitor student progress and develop strategies as appropriate.
Goal 2: 98% of parents and 97% students surveyed will agree that Cedar Island provides a safe environment where all children can feel a sense of belonging.
- Teachers will use the Responsive Classroom techniques of Morning Meeting and developing student hopes and dreams to build a sense of community.
- The character education program will include Project Wisdom announcements. We will focus on the character words of “caring”, “respect”, “responsibility” and “honesty”.
- CLIMB theater will be contracted to conduct anti-bullying and/or friendship assemblies along with follow-up sessions with each grade level.
- Teachable character moments will be integrated into Wednesday’s Morning Meetings.
- We will continue with “color days” to promote and remind students of the character we are working on for that month. Example, “red day” will remind us of “caring”.
