Cedar Island PTO Minutes- Thurs. April 3, 2008

 

7:00 p.m. in Conference Room

Attendees: 7 parents and 3 staff

The meeting was called to order by president, Bonnie Keating.

Principal’s Report: Dan Wald

Dan spoke about the events of the school evacuation Thursday afternoon to Oak View. The Cedar Island staff did an excellent job carrying out the evacuation. Dan spoke about the school restructuring meeting held at Cedar Island on Tuesday night. A steering committee is forming with two representatives from Cedar Island, Krista Biason and Julie Wesley. Twenty-seven people volunteered to serve on joint work groups. Climb Theatre will assist with a program to help the transition for third, fourth and fifth graders to Oak View. Amy Moger is taking the lead on this project. Class sizes for next year will be 38 students per class for 4 th,5 th, and 6 th grades, 34 students for 2 nd and 3 rd grades, 30 students for kindergarten and 1 st grades. Class sizes were previously, 34 students for 4 th, 5 th, and 6 th grades, 26 students for 2 nd and 3 rd, and 22 for kindergarten and 1 st grades. Dan reported that they are going through the staffing process at this time.

Treasurer’s Report: Shannon Manning

The treasurer’s report was passed out. The Bobcat Bash income was $6,000 over budget. A round of applause was given for that good news. Donations for the Save Cedar Island cause totaled $410. Shannon will send out thank you notes. Target will be presenting a check to Cedar Island.

Volunteer Update: Barb Lindsay

Revised flower order forms will be sent home soon. The Got Spring program will start a week from Monday. May 16 is the All Walk to School day. Small bottles of water and peppermint candies will be purchased for students taking the MCA test totaling approximately $300. No food or beverages will be purchased for the Northwest test. Friday, May 9 is the date of the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast.

President’s Report: Bonnie Keating

Bonnie ordered zipper pulls as welcome gifts for Oak View students currently in kindergarten, first, and second grades. Bonnie is looking into options for water bottles/mugs to give as gifts to current Cedar Island students. Sara Krueger is interested in running for the PTO office of president. Kathy Nistler expressed an interest in the secretary position. No one has expressed an interest in the assistant treasurer position at this time. Bylaws will be addressed at the May PTO meeting. The Art Adventure program was successful this year. Costs are $150 for the kit and $10 per volunteer for training. Cedar Island will sign up to participate in the program again next year. Discussion was held on hosting an open house for new Oak View families to visit Cedar Island this spring. The school toolbox project will be suspended for next year.
