Fair Oaks Student Groups Who Meet Goals Enjoy “M.A.G.I.C.” at U of M
As a reward for their accomplishments, two distinct groups of Fair Oaks Elementary students joined together for a special Friday night outing at the University of Minnesota. The school’s 5th and 6th grade student ambassadors and the 5th and 6th grade Continental Math League students were challenged to meet specific goals to earn their ticket to the “magical” event.
In order to earn a ticket, the student ambassadors were required to complete 5 hours of community service and write an essay explaining 1) why they believe they should be a student ambassador representing Fair Oaks, and 2) why they feel it is important to give back to the community. The 5th and 6th grade CML students were challenged to earn a score of 5 or 6 on their first Continental Math League meet in order to join the ambassadors for the outing.
Fair Oaks’ Talented and Gifted teacher Betsy Fine worked with the University of Minnesota Men’s Swim Team, so the Fair Oaks student ambassadors and CML students could earn a “M.A.G.I.C.” pass to attend this special field trip at the U of M. “M.A.G.I.C.” stands for Maroon and Gold Impacting the Community. Each student ambassador and CML student who met their goal received a complete tour of all of the sports facilities at the University, a t-shirt, posters and autographs, and was treated to a pizza dinner. They also cheered on the University’s swimming and diving teams who were taking part in an Invitational Swim Meet that same evening.
All the Fair Oaks students who took part in the field trip had a wonderful time and became aware of how they, too, impact their community through their student ambassador work or through achieving their personal best in academics.

Tim Sawyer, Guest Conductor for the District 279 Junior High Honor Choir
On February 8, 2007, 8th and 9th grade choir students from all four junior high schools participated in an all-day Honor Choir experience at Maple Grove Junior High. They performed under Tim Sawyer, director of choral activities and associate professor of music at Northwestern College in St. Paul. The students worked with more than 80 other 8th and 9th grade students in District 279 as a combined choir, and as separate girls and boys choirs.
They then presented a concert of their work of the day at Maple Grove Junior High at 3:30 p.m. This is the first time District 279 has offered this kind of event for 8th and 9th grade singers.
