Strategic Planning – The Development of Core Values
Core values, we all have them, whether we are fully aware of them or not. Core values influence every decision we make and serve as the foundation of a truly successful life. They are the things we care about most deeply. Jim Collins, author of Good to Great and Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, says this about core values: [They are] “the organization’s essential and enduring tenets—a small set of timeless guiding principles that require no external justification; they have intrinsic value and importance to those inside the organization.”

Birch Grove Elementary School for the Arts awarded Escher Certificate
On January 24, 2007, Karla Fawbush, Director of Magnet Schools at Northwest Suburban Integration School District, awarded Birch Grove Elementary School for the Arts the Escher Certificate. Named after the mathematician and artist M.C. Escher, the award recognizes Birch Grove's transition from a traditional elementary school to an arts magnet school. Accepting the award was Mai Yia Amanda Lee, principal, and Beth Carpenter, curriculum integration coordinator.

award image1award image2"We focus on integration of the arts into everything," said Carpenter. "That's what Escher's work does." Integrating the arts with all aspects of the school experience while meeting all district standards is both challenging and rewarding.

The two and a half year transition, seeded by a federal Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant, has brought about dramatic changes. Students receive regular instruction by specialists in visual arts, music, drama, dance, and/or media arts. Equally important, all students learn through the arts. The integration of academic and arts standards on a daily basis brings new and deeper meaning to concepts and skills in reading, science, social studies, and math. "We've seen the arts open doors to academic achievement for many children at Birch Grove," said Wendy Barden, curriculum integration coordinator.

The Escher Certificate is proudly displayed in the school office, and stands as a milestone in the transition to provide instruction for all students in and through the arts.
