Fernbrook 5th Graders Help With Cure for Juvenile Diabetes
Over the last two weeks, the fifth graders at Fernbrook Elementary School collected over $2,400 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk for a Cure event at the Mall of America. Chris, who developed juvenile diabetes 8 years ago, came to Fernbrook in early January and explained the disease and its treatment, including blood glucose tests and insulin shots. The four classrooms then competed against each other to see which fifth grade class would win a special prize. Steve Folkerds’ class enjoyed their pizza party donated by Scott Bennett’s Domino's Pizza (13590 Grove Drive) on the Tuesday following the Walk.
Besides bringing in donations, the fifth graders walked around the outdoor track (or the gym on colder days!) to simulate the organized walk at the Mall. After adding together the laps the entire fifth grade walked, the students calculated that it would have added up to 354.23 times around the ground floor of the Mall of America, or 201.91 miles. Some of the students and their family and friends joined Chris' team Saturday at the Mall and walked with thousands of others hoping to find a cure for juvenile diabetes soon.
Two Osseo Area Learning Center Students Chosen to Attend the National Future Educator’s of America Conference The Northwest Suburban Integration School District has elected 8 delegates to represent the state of Minnesota at the Future Educators of America (FEA) conference. Two of the students chosen are Osseo Area Learning Center students, Jackie Daniels and Erin Parker. In order to participate in the National Conference students needed to complete an essay about what they think education will look like in the year 2020 and be recommended by two staff members.
Future Educators of America is a club that allows students to explore careers in education and to develop the necessary skills to be successful in education. One of FEA’s main goals is to recruit students into education positions. The Osseo Area Learning Center’s chapter of FEA has been active this year with college tours and creating conference survival packs for those long conference days.
Both Jackie and Erin will be participating in competition events at the local and national level that will help prepare them for a career in education. Erin and Jackie are both excited and appreciative of this once in a lifetime experience and for the opportunity to bring valuable information back to there FEA peers.
Please wish them the best of luck!
