Astronaut Inspires Elm Creek Elementary Students and Staff
Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper spent an hour with students at Elm Creek Elementary on Dec. 5th sharing her experience aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. Astronaut Piper, a St. Paul, Minnesota native, spent 12 days in September making repairs to the International Space Station. She became one of only 7 women in history to conduct a space walk and the first Minnesota woman in space.
Her visit to Elm Creek Elementary School was an early kickoff for their “I Love to Read” month celebration with the theme of: “Rocket into Reading.” The month of February will be a special time to celebrate reading all month long with an outer space focus. Elm Creek students were inspired by Astronaut Heidemarie Piper to strive for their dreams and never give up. The excitement is building and students will be ready and eager to Blast Off! into a month-long celebration of reading in February.
Congratulations to Fernbrook Alumni Mitchell Abeln and Zack Gawboy for Award Winning Musical Compositions
Every year, all 6th graders compose an original piece of music and perform their works for their classes. In April, all 6th grade students had the option to participate in Fernbrook’s 3rd Annual Sixth Grade Composition Recital. There were approximately 10 works presented at the recital. The works that were performed were then compiled to create an audio CD. This CD, in turn, was sent to the State Music Educators Conference, and the works were judged by professional composers and compared to pieces which were submitted by other music teachers throughout the state of Minnesota.
Zack’s piece was entitled, “Opus 1” and was written for the B-flat trumpet. Zack earned a highly respected, “Honorable Mention,” for his work. Mitchell Abeln’s piece was written for the French Horn, and was titled, “Military March.” Mitchell earned a 3rd Place award for his composition.
Both composers are currently in 7th Grade at Osseo Junior High. Congratulations to these Fernbrook alumni!
