Two school funding requests to be on November ballot

In the absence of stable, predictable funding from the state, the ISD 279 School Board took action this month to place two school funding questions on the November 2013 ballot:

  • an operating levy to continue progress in increasing student achievement and to avoid another round of approximately $8 million in budget cuts for the 2014-2015 school year; and
  • a technology levy to purchase, install and maintain software and technology for school instruction.

Watch for more information on these funding requests in the coming months.

If you could ask Warren Buffett one question, what would it be?

Warren BuffettBasswood Elementary fifth-grader Joshua Miller (left, front row) experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet business leader Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting as part of GENYOUth Foundation’s AdVenture Capital grant program. Miller is one of five students nationwide serving as a Student Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60, the nation’s largest in-school wellness program. Each student submitted an entrepreneurial idea to give their classmates greater access to healthier food and physical activity. Basswood Elementary will receive $4,000 from GENYOUth Foundation to implement Miller’s “Motivational Mondays,” a 30-minute weekly exercise program. Fernbrook celebrates 25 years of helping students achieve their dreams

The year Fernbrook Elementary opened (1988), “Phantom of the Opera” opened on Broadway; Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen faced George H.W. Bush and Dan Quayle in the presidential race; the movie “ET” was released to home video; the Minnesota Twins were the first American League club to break 3 million season attendance; and there was no such thing as the World Wide Web.

Take a blast to the past by attending Fernbrook’s 25th anniversary celebration on Thursday, May 30, from 5-7 pm (program at 6 pm). You’ll enjoy an ice cream social in the cafeteria and a display of memorabilia in the media center. You might see one of your former teachers or principals there, too!

For more information, contact Fernbrook at 763-420-8888.
