About President Obama’s speech to students on September 8
According to the U.S. Department of Education web site, www.ed.gov, President Obama will address students across the United States at 11 a.m. Central Time on the first day of school, September 8. The Department of Education web site notes that the President will use his message to challenge students to work hard, set education goals, and take responsibility for their learning.
We have advised school leaders in ISD 279 to do the following if they are considering showing the President’s speech:
- First, review a recorded version of the speech and then decide if it will be shown in school at a future date.
- Review the classroom activities created by the U.S. Dept of Education to accompany the message.
- Then, if teachers wish to show the President’s message, they should notify parents/guardians in advance, allowing parents who do not want their child to view the speech during the school day to opt out by sending a signed note to school.
According to a news report on Minnesota Public Radio, the White House says this will be the first speech to students by a sitting president since George H.W. Bush in 1991.
